Is fish a staple in your diet?

Study after study show that adding fish to your diet is a healthy move. Fish is a high-protein, low-fat food that provides a range of health benefits. White-fleshed fish, in particular, is lower in fat than any other source of animal protein, and oily fish are high in omega 3 essential fatty acids, also known as “the good fats.”

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential because your body cannot make them on its own, so they must be obtained through your diet. But, do you consume enough of these good fats? Research indicates you should eat fish two to three times each week – but do you?

Reasons for this can vary – not everyone likes the taste or texture of fish, or eating that much fish could be too expensive. There are also concerns about pollutants, toxins, and mercury in the water that can accumulate in the flesh of fish. It’s likely you’re not eating as much fish as you need, and this is where quality fish oil supplements offer an excellent solution.

When looking at achieving your weekly recommended intake of essential fatty acids, there is no easier or more cost-effective option than fish oil supplementation.

They can be taken as part of your daily diet to top up your omega 3 nutritional requirements. Supplements take away problems with taste or texture by providing fish oil in the convenience of an easy-to-swallow capsule.

Fish oil supplements go through a process called ‘molecular distillation,’ which filters out nasties like toxins, pollutants, and mercury, leaving a pure fish oil. This delivers the confidence and reassurance to consume these essential fats on a daily basis.

For some, the downside of fish oil capsules can be experiencing indigestion or a fishy aftertaste. Here are some tips to prevent that unpleasant sensation:

  1. Try taking your fish oil with a meal rather than on an empty stomach
  2. Take it with water rather than with a hot drink
  3. Look for a naturally-flavoured capsule to further disguise the taste of fish
  4. Choose a supplement that contains omega 3 fats in the form of phospholipids, because phospholipids are digested in your small intestine rather than your stomach, so they are less likely to repeat on you – in other words, no fishy burps!
